HEEL PAIN - (Arch Pain / Heel Spurs / Plantar Fasciitis / foot pain that is worse in the morning, and worse after long term standing, walking or running.)

  • HEEL PAIN is associated with Plantar Fasciitis and Heel Spurs. It often occurs along with foot arch pain, or other foot pain. All of these symptoms of this problem can result from collapse of the inside arch of the foot.  This is called over-pronation. Custom Foot Orthotics can help to support the collapse arch and thereby decrease or remove the stress on the plantar fascia and other muscles and ligaments in the foot. FOREFOOT PAIN - (Pain in ball of foot / Morton's Toe - Morton's Neuralgia / 2nd-3rd-4th Toe Numbness / worse with tight shoes or long term standing, walking or running)

  • FOREFOOT PAIN - is often associated with tight fitting shoes, however this is only one of many underlying problems that can cause forefoot pain.  Forefoot pain is called "metatarsalgia" and is often felt as pain in the ball of the foot just behind the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th toes.  It is also often associated with numbness in these toes. When this occurs it is known as "Morton's Neuroma" or Morton's Toe"  One of the major underlying causes for forefoot pain, Morton's Neuroma, or metatarsalgia is collapse of the transverse metatarsal arch, or, the arch across the ball of the foot.  This can be caused by a direct trauma (such as a horse stepping on your foot) or from a chronic overuse trauma such as walking in shoes that are too tight or running in bad footwear.  This can also happen from poor biomechanics within the foot.  If the instep arch (or medial arch) collapses, this changes the muscle action in the foot and results in the abnormal motion of the foot, or over-pronation.  Custom dynamic foot orthotics, prescribed by Dr. Cherye Roche, using the GaitScan analysis system, can help to support all of the archs of the feet and allow for the foot muscels and tendons to relax and heal.  

BUNIONS - (Big Toe pain / hallux valgus / 1st Metatarsal-Phalangial osteo-arthritis - worse with poorly fitted shoes, and long term standing, walking or running.)

  • BUNIONS - are a complex problem with several underlying causes - many of them relating to poor foot biomechanics.  When the foot archs collapse the foot rolls onto the inside and there is excessive pressure on the great toe during the "push off" phase of walking.  When this happens repetatively over many years, the joint between the great toe and the foot becomes deformed due to the stress on it.   If the instep arch (or medial arch) collapses, this changes the muscle action in the foot and results in the metatarsal arch collapsing as well.  Custom dynamic foot orthotics, prescribed by Dr. Cherye Roche, using the GaitScan analysis system, can help to support all of the archs of the feet and allow for the foot muscels and tendons to relax, heal and re-align.

  • SHIN SPLINTS - is a generic term for shin pain that can occur in more than one location, and for a variety of reasons, usually from overuse with long term walking or running.  Most commonly it is the anterior tibial tendon (front of the shin) or posterior tibial tendon (inside of the shin) that are affected.  This is usually a result of faulty foot biomechanics from collapse of the instep arch of the foot.  If the instep arch (or medial arch) collapses, this changes the muscle action in the foot and results in the abnormal motion of the foot or over-pronation.  Over-pronation causes excessive stress in the tibial tendons which then become inflamed and painful. KNEE PAIN -

Front of knee pain- Anterior Knee Pain (AKP) / Patello-Femoral Tracking Syndrome (PFTS), Crepitus, Chondromalatia Patellae; These are all the clinical names for a condition that is described as a grinding pain in the knee cap that you can feel and sometimes hear. It is especially painful when going up or down stairs or hills. It is very common in women and less so in men. It is worse after long term standing, walking or running. This is usually a result of faulty foot biomechanics from collapse of the instep arch of the foot.  If the instep arch (or medial arch) collapses, this changes the muscle action in the foot and results in the abnormal motion of the foot or over-pronation.  This then creates twisting in the knee. ILIO-TIBIAL BAND SYNDROME - ITBS - hip pain worse after long term standing, walking or running.)

Pain on the outside of the knee, along the outside of the thigh and up into the hip is known as Ilio-Tibial Band Syndrome. It is due to chronic stress on the IT Band, often due to faulty biomechanics in the knee or hip.  This is often due to faulty biomechanics in the foot that creates an unstable base for the knee and hip to stand or move on. Therefore, with an increase in activity such as  walking or running, a small biomechanical fault in the foot can cause a big problem in the IT Band as it contracts to try to prevent excessive motion in the knee and hip. This is commonly a result of faulty foot biomechanics from collapse of the instep arch of the foot.  If the instep arch (or medial arch) collapses, this changes the muscle action in the foot and results in the abnormal motion of the foot or over-pronation. This then creates twisting in the knee and the  hip. PIRIFORMIS SYNDDROME - hip/buttock pain after strenuous exercise such as squatting and is worse after long term standing, walking or running.

Pain in the center of the buttock, that sometimes radiates down the leg like sciatica, is known as Piriformis Syndrome. It is due to chronic stress on the piriformis muscle, which rotates the hip joint. It is often due to faulty biomechanics in the foot, knee, or hip.  This is often due to faulty biomechanics in the foot that creates an unstable base for the knee and hip to stand or move on. Therefore, with an increase in activity such as  walking or running, a small biomechanical fault in the foot can cause a big problem in the piriformis muscle as it contracts to try to prevent excessive motion in the hip. This is commonly a result of faulty foot biomechanics from collapse of the instep arch of the foot.  If the instep arch (or medial arch) collapses, this changes the muscle action in the foot and results in the abnormal motion of the foot or over-pronation. This then creates twisting in the knee and the hip. GLUTEUS MEDIUS SYNDROME- overuse strain of the gluteus medius muscle that is worse after long term standing, walking or running.

Pain in the center of the buttock is sometimes a result of gluteus medius Syndrome. It is due to chronic stress on the gluteus medius muscle, which moves the hip joint. It is often due to faulty biomechanics in the foot, knee, or hip.  This can be due to faulty biomechanics in the foot that creates an unstable base for the knee and hip to stand or move on.
